SAINT CHARLES BORROMEO CHURCH: Baroque at its best

This is the pre-eminent Baroque church in the Low Countries. We can recognize Rubens’s hand as well in the architecture, as in the paintings and decoration. Let yourselves be overwhelmed by the façade with its catholic symbols and figures, and numerous playful and exuberant embellishments.

Saint Charles Borromeo Church, at this enjoyable square called Conscienceplein, is no doubt one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Belgium. The magnificent façade of the former Jesuit church is full of symbolism combining religious and theatrical elements.

Inside the church with its galleries looks very much like celestial ballroom. The portico altar has an ingenious system allowing paintings to be changed three times a year.

Another highlight is Our Lady’s Chapel with its original Baroque furnishings.

Do not forget to pay a visit to the exceptionally rich Lace Room, only open on Wednesday afternoons. (or by appointment) !
