SAINT PAUL’S CHURCH: the unknown Rubens Church

At a stone’s throw from the river Scheldt there is this ‘Baroque jewel in an Gothic shrine’.

The former Dominican monastery church, consecrated in 1571, is a true feast for the eye: the magnificent Baroque altars, the sublime woodwork, the dazzling organ, and more than 200 statues. Moreover there are over 50 paintings, including the series of the ’15 Mysteries of the Rosary’, with work by Jordaens, Rubens, Teniers, Van Balen, Van Dyck a.o.

These splendid paintings are still on the very spot for which they were designed 400 years ago. They give the church its unique character.

Do not forget to visit the impressive Calvary Garden, ‘The New Jerusalem’, which looks very much like an 18th century film set.
