Do you feel like taking a look at this new eye-catcher of Antwerp’s skyline? Or would you rather admire the city and harbour from a breath-taking perspective? Pay a visit to the Port House (the Port Authority Building) and learn everything about its marvellous architecture and operation.
The Port House, in the northern quarter of Antwerp that is called Eilandje (Islet), is one of the newest gems of Antwerp. The original building was designed 100 years ago as a fire station for northern Antwerp. Between 2012 and 2016 a magnificent new shape, in which some observe a ship and others a diamond, was constructed on top of that building. The entire construction, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, now serves as Port House.
Inside you learn everything about the role of the river Scheldt for Antwerp, the history of the harbour and how the Port Authority operates. While you’re making a tour of the building the guide naturally tells you extensively about its wonderful architecture, which ingeniously combines old and new. And as apotheosis you get a dazzling view on city and harbour from ‘ the bridge’.
