On the grounds of the former Antwerp South goods station an ultramodern new district is growing. We start with a view on the old South District, which took form in the 19th century. Also in the beginning of the 21st century they started from scratch to build an ultramodern new quarter on 50 acres of land. Now the focus is especially on sustainable and ecologically sound urban principles and building techniques. Come and discover this area and walk along with us from the ‘old new’ to the ‘new new’ and from the 19th to the 21st century.Feast your eyes during this walk and get acquainted with this unique and revolutionary new Antwerp district. Discover the sustainable, energy- and water-saving principles and admire the modern architecture by internationally renowned architects.
You will get insight in the history of the old South End, the Southern docks and the Antwerp South railway station. We also walk across the reception hall of J. van Breda Bank, the magnificently restored counter hall of the ancient goods station. On the embankment you will learn more about the Sigma plan, the new layout of the quays and the new South Park. In the heating installation you will see the technical space and how this exceptional heating system works will be explained.
We can finish on the hill by the heating tower and look forward to the big connection with the Southern Ring Park.
